Postsynaptic potential or PSP refers to a change in the electrical potential of a postsynaptic membrane when neurotransmitters released by presynaptic neurons bind to chemically-gated postsynaptic receptors.
These receptors are of two types.
Ionotropic receptors have ion channels and neurotransmitter binding sites to facilitate the ion flow in or out of the postsynaptic membrane.
Metabotropic receptors have binding sites for neurotransmitters but lack ion channels.
PSPs are graded potentials that can be excitatory or inhibitory.
An excitatory postsynaptic potential or EPSP depolarizes the postsynaptic membrane.
For example, a neurotransmitter such as acetylcholine binds to its ionotropic acetylcholine receptor, opening the channel and allowing sodium ions influx. This depolarizes the membrane generating an EPSP.
In contrast, the inhibitory postsynaptic potential or IPSP hyperpolarizes the postsynaptic membrane.
For example, when a neurotransmitter, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid, binds to its ionotropic GABA receptor, the channel opens, allowing chloride ion influx. This hyperpolarizes the membrane generating an IPSP.
