The adaptive immune system provides a specialized defense using T and B lymphocytes with specific features to combat infections effectively.
These cells are characterized by specificity, versatility, memory, and tolerance to host antigens.
T and B lymphocytes have specific receptors that recognize and respond to specific antigens, allowing them to target and eliminate particular pathogens.
In order to specifically bind multiple antigens, the developing precursor cells within the red bone marrow differentiate to generate versatile types of lymphocytes exhibiting diverse antigen sensitivities.
Additionally, after the adaptive immune system encounters a specific antigen, it generates memory cells that "remember" that antigen, leading to a rapid immune response if the body encounters the same antigen in the future.
The T and B lymphocytes can distinguish between self and non-self, allowing them to tolerate the body's own cells and tissues.
If a particular pathogenic antigen or body cell with an abnormal antigen activates these lymphocytes, they will selectively eliminate or inactivate that antigen without affecting other self-antigens in normal tissues.
