Consider a column subjected to an eccentric loading F. This eccentric loading is equivalent to a combination of centric load F and the couple moment generated due to eccentric loading.
Drawing a free-body diagram of the section of column PR and choosing an appropriate coordinate system gives the couple moment at point R.
Substituting the couple moment at point R in the differential equation of the elastic curve and solving it gives the equation for the elastic curve. The solution's coefficients can be calculated using the boundary value conditions.
At the half length of the column, the maximum deflection on the column can be determined. The equation of the maximum deflection becomes infinite when the secant term becomes infinite.
The infinite deflection criterion gives the expression for the critical loading condition. Substituting this in the expression for the maximum deflection gives the maximum deflection in terms of critical loading.
