Dietary vitamins are essential as they facilitate the utilization of various other nutrients.
They predominantly act as coenzymes, assisting different enzymes.
Vitamins are either fat-soluble, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, or water-soluble, like the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C.
Vitamin K and certain B vitamins are synthesized in small amounts by intestinal bacteria, while vitamin D is synthesized in the skin.
The rest of the vitamins must be consumed through food or supplements.
Underconsumption of vitamin A may lead to vision problems, vitamin D to bone deformities, vitamin E to neuronal degeneration, and vitamin K to defective blood clotting.
Excess vitamin D may cause cardiovascular and kidney disorders, vitamin A liver damage, and vitamin K hemolytic anemia.
A dietary deficiency of B1 can lead to Beriberi, B2 to skin lesions, B5 to fatigue, and B9 to birth defects. Overconsumption of B3 may harm the liver and B6 can impair coordination.
Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy and poor wound healing, but its high intake could upset the gastrointestinal tract.
