The liver synthesizes most cholesterol from acetyl CoA and transports it to the blood through lipoproteins.
These lipoproteins are of three types.
VLDLs transport triglycerides from the liver to the adipose tissue. During transport in the bloodstream, VLDLs are converted into LDLs.
The LDLs transport cholesterol to peripheral tissue for hormone or membrane synthesis and storage.
The HDL particles collect the excess cholesterol from tissue cells and artery walls, transporting it to the liver for degradation and bile formation.
A high proportion of saturated fatty acids in the diet triggers the liver to produce more cholesterol.
Conversely, unsaturated fatty acids facilitate the elimination of cholesterol and its breakdown into bile salts, thereby reducing overall cholesterol levels.
LDL levels over 160 mg/dL and total blood cholesterol above 200 mg/dL in adults are unhealthy. They cause harmful cholesterol deposition in artery walls, leading to strokes and heart attacks.
HDLs above 60 mg/dL can help reduce atherosclerosis by pulling out cholesterol from artery walls.
