The urinary system, or renal system, has four main components — the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs located just above the waist, partially protected by the rib cage.
Kidneys help form urine and produce hormones. They also regulate blood pressure and electrolyte levels.
The ureters are tubes about 10 to 12 inches long, connecting each kidney to the bladder.
The urinary bladder is a muscular sac located in the pelvis behind the pubic symphysis.
It serves as temporary storage for urine, holding as much as 600 mL of urine.
The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. In males, the urethra is longer, ending at the tip of the penis, and in females, it ends just above the vaginal opening.
The urinary system filters waste and excess products from the bloodstream. It also regulates pH, glucose, and ionic composition in blood.
