The formation of urine involves three steps — glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion.
Glomerular filtration occurs within the renal corpuscle. In this process, blood plasma is pushed through the pores of a filtration membrane, permitting water and small solutes to pass while restricting most plasma proteins and blood cells.
The resulting filtrate then moves to the renal tubules and collecting ducts.
During tubular reabsorption, about 99% of water and solutes are reabsorbed from the filtrate back into the blood.
During tubular secretion, the renal tubules and ducts selectively remove excess ions, toxins like drugs, and other wastes from the blood and secrete them into the filtrate.
The remaining filtrate then moves to calyces, forming urine.
Filtrate is the fluid filtered out of the blood in renal corpuscles, while urine is the remaining filtrate after reabsorption and secretion in renal tubules.
The kidneys filter approximately 180 L of fluid from the blood every day. Less than 1% is excreted as urine, while the remainder is reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
