Measures of central tendency are descriptive statistical tools that describe the average or center of a data set.
These include mean, median, mode, and midrange.
The arithmetic mean, average, or mean is calculated by adding all values in a dataset and dividing them by the total number of values. It is sensitive to extreme values and may not accurately represent skewed datasets.
The median, on the other hand, is the middle value in an ordered dataset. Unlike the mean, it is less influenced by outliers, making it useful for skewed datasets.
The mode is the value appearing most frequently in a data set. This measure is beneficial for identifying a dataset's most common value or category.
The midrange is the value midway between the extreme dataset values.
In biostatistics, these measures can reveal insights such as patient age distributions, disease susceptibility, or treatment effectiveness.
