Water added to concrete aids in the hydration of cement, contributing to the strength and durability of concrete.
Generally, potable water, if available, is mixed in concrete. High sodium or potassium ions in the water can compromise the strength and durability of the concrete.
Additionally, water from which excess silt has been settled, impurity-free concrete mixer wash water, natural water that is slightly acidic, and algae-free water can be used for concrete mixing.
Water with a pH in the range of 6 to 8, which is not saline or brackish, is preferred for mixing.
Water suitable for mixing can also aid in concrete curing by maintaining essential moisture for ongoing cement hydration post-setting.
Curing concrete using water containing free carbon dioxide can lead to surface erosion in hardened concrete. Furthermore, the presence of iron or organic matter in the curing water may result in stains on the concrete surface.
Using seawater for mixing or curing may lead to corrosion of reinforcements in concrete and may result in persistent dampness and efflorescence.
