Consider a small fluid element at rest. The fluid acceleration is zero, and the general equation of motion simplifies accordingly.
Under these conditions, only the vertical component has a force acting on the fluid.
If pressures at different fluid levels vary, integrating the vertical force components gives the pressure difference between the two levels.
If the distance between two levels is h, the pressure difference can be expressed in terms of h.
Here, h is termed the pressure head, which indicates the pressure at the lower point due to the fluid in the region between the lower point and the upper point.
If the upper reference is assumed to be the surface of water, then the pressure on the surface is frequently atmospheric pressure.
Then the pressure at any depth h below the surface of the fluid is expressed in terms of the atmospheric pressure.
This indicates that for a fluid at rest, the pressure at any point below the surface depends on the depth and the atmospheric pressure acting at the surface.
