Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI scan, is a radiation-free technique that produces detailed images of the kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs and diagnoses conditions like kidney tumors, ovarian cysts, infections, and endometriosis.
Pre-procedure guidelines include educating the patient, assessing renal function, instructing the patient to fast for 4 hours, and screening for metallic implants.
During the MRI scan, the nurse positions the patient on the table and may inject IV contrast dye if needed.
The patient moves inside a large machine with a powerful magnet that generates a strong magnetic field that aligns the hydrogen nuclei or protons in the body's tissues.
The machine then sends radio waves into the body, temporarily displacing the aligned protons from their positions.
When the radio waves are turned off, the protons emit signals that the MRI machine detects, and a computer processes them into detailed images.
Post-procedure, if contrast dye was used, the nurse monitors for allergic reactions and encourages fluid intake to help eliminate the dye. In all cases, documentation is essential.
