Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder

Theorists have proposed four approaches to explain the factors contributing to the development of psychological disorders.

First, the biological approach views disorders as medical conditions caused by biological factors like brain structure, genetics, and neurotransmitter imbalances. It treats individuals as "patients" and typically involves medical interventions for treatment.

Second, the psychological approach emphasizes the role of personal experiences, emotions, thought patterns, and personality characteristics in the development of disorders, often focusing on childhood experiences and learned behaviors.

Similarly, the sociocultural approach highlights how factors like gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family relationships, and culture shape mental health.

This approach emphasizes that culture influences the prevalence of disorders and perceptions of treatment, such as poverty, notably increasing psychological disorder rates.

Finally, the biopsychosocial perspective integrates biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, proposing that disorders arise from the interplay of these diverse elements.

This combined approach recognizes that each disorder may stem from a unique blend of factors, resulting in varied manifestations and experiences of similar conditions.
