Generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD, is characterized by persistent and uncontrollable worry that occurs without a clear cause.
This anxiety often affects daily activities related to work, health, or relationships and lasts for at least six months.
For example, someone may feel anxious about their health even after a clean medical report or constantly fear being late despite always arriving on time.
Symptoms of GAD include excessive worry, muscle tension, fatigue, irritability, stomach problems, difficulty concentrating, trembling, sweating, sleep disturbances, and a constant feeling of being on edge.
Biological causes of GAD include a genetic predisposition, a deficiency in the neurotransmitter Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid or GABA, and brain differences, particularly in the amygdala, which processes emotions.
Psychological and sociocultural factors play a significant role in GAD. These include harsh self-standards, overly strict or critical parents, and automatic negative thoughts during stress. A history of uncontrollable traumas, such as an abusive upbringing, also increases the risk.
Additionally, research shows that women more commonly suffer from GAD than men.
