Modeling in Therapy

Modeling uses observational learning to help clients acquire new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. Clients learn by observing positive actions, such as maintaining eye contact during conversations, then practice these behaviors themselves. This approach is rooted in vicarious learning, where clients gain confidence and competence through guided observation and practice in a supportive therapeutic environment.

Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm, effective behaviors in situations clients find challenging, then guiding them step-by-step through the same process. For example, a therapist might model entering an elevator for a claustrophobic client, then support them in taking the elevator independently. This technique helps clients confront fears in a controlled environment while building confidence to manage situations alone.

Assertion training teaches clients to express thoughts and feelings directly yet appropriately, balancing submissiveness and aggressiveness.
