Life on Earth has become more diverse and interesting over time through a process called evolution.
A long time ago, a scientist named Charles Darwin traveled the world on a ship. During his journey, he studied plants and animals in different places.
One of the most important places he visited was the Galápagos Islands. There, he noticed that some animals looked alike but had small differences that helped them survive.
Take iguanas, for example. Some lived on land and ate cacti on one island, while others swam in the ocean and ate seaweed on another island. Even though they were both iguanas, their bodies had adapted to fit their environment.
This observation led Darwin to the idea that animals evolve by inheriting traits over time to better survive in their environment.
These useful traits were passed down over many generations, shaping species.
This process is called evolution by natural selection. After years of research, Darwin published a famous book called On the Origin of Species, explaining how all living things evolve.
