Divergent Plate Boundaries
A divergent plate boundary on a continent is a tectonic boundary where two continental plates slowly move apart due to convection currents in the Earth's mantle.
As heat from the mantle rises, it causes the overlying crust to stretch and weaken, eventually forming deep fractures known as faults.
As the crust continues to thin, its large sections sink between faults, creating a long, narrow depression called a rift valley. Due to the rising magma, this region often experiences volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Over time, the rift valley widens and may sink below sea level. When seawater enters the rift, it transforms into a narrow ocean.
With continued plate movement, a mid-ocean ridge forms at the center, where new crust is created. This process gradually expands the ocean basin, eventually forming a mature ocean over millions of years.
An example of this process is the East African Rift, where the African Plate is splitting into the Nubian and Somali plates.
Scientists predict that, over millions of years, this rift could develop into a new ocean.
