Types of Soils

Soil is not the same everywhere. Different types of soil form based on climate, rainfall, and vegetation.

One common type of soil is pedalfer, found in deciduous forests. It forms in areas with heavy rainfall, at least 65 cm per year. This soil is dark brown or black, rich in organic material, and very fertile.

Pedocal soil is found in dry grasslands and brushlands. It forms in areas with less than 65 cm of rain per year. Because of the lower rainfall, there is less chemical weathering, so the soil contains fewer nutrients and less organic material, making it slightly less fertile.

Laterite soil forms in tropical rainforests with heavy, frequent rainfall. Heavy rainfall depletes minerals and nutrients from the soil. This soil is red due to iron oxides and becomes hard like brick when exposed to the Sun. It is not very fertile for farming.

The soil type in a region determines plant growth and land use, helping scientists, farmers, and environmentalists manage land for agriculture and conservation.
