Locomotion During Infancy and Toddlerhood

Children develop a wide range of motor skills during the first three years of life.

Most infants begin rolling over at around four months. They roll first from tummy to back and then from back to tummy.

By six months, many infants can sit briefly with minimal support, and by eight months, they usually sit steadily.

Between seven and eight months, infants begin moving independently by creeping on their bellies or crawling on their hands and knees.

Around nine months, infants can stand while holding onto support and often practice cruising along furniture before standing independently.

At around eleven and a half months, most infants can stand without support and gradually take their first unaided steps.

By one year, many infants walk independently, though with an unsteady gait.

During the second year, toddlers refine their motor skills. Most children climb stairs one step at a time.

By two and a half years, most children can walk on tiptoes, climb stairs using alternating feet, jump, and swing their arms while walking.

Finally, around three years, they can briefly balance on one foot, pedal a tricycle, and use a handrail on stairs
