Branko Kolaric, FRSC obtained his PhD in the field of surface physics and physical chemistry at TU Berlin, Germany. In 2018, he became Full Research Professor at the Institute of Physics, University of Belgrade, Serbia. Currently, he is also a Senior Researcher at MNM group at University of Mons, Belgium, and between 2014-2019 was a vice leader of the work group 3 “Quantum Coherence at the Nanoscale” of the European COST Action Nanoscale Quantum Optics. Currently, he is guest editor for Special Focus Issues in Applied Sciences and Symmetry, MDPI, all of which are dedicated to nano and nonlinear photonics. His research interests cover various aspects of classical and quantum nanoscale optics, photonics, and plasmonics.

Sébastien R. Mouchet received his BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Physics from the University of Namur, Belgium. Since his MSc and PhD degrees, he has studied the physical origins of various visual effects evolved by natural organisms: from additive colours in photonic polycrystals and fluid-induced colour changes, to fluorescence emission in natural photonic structures and UV scattering in integuments. After the completion of his PhD degree in 2015, he spent about 5 years carrying out his research as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Exeter, UK. He is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Namur, where he was appointed honorary lecturer and later senior honorary lecturer. Since the beginning of his PhD degree, his research has mainly been supported by the Belgian National Fund for Scientificc Research (FRS-FNRS) through fellowships he secured, in addition to a Postdoctoral Fellowship for Excellence program WBI.WORLD, a grant from the Maturation Fund of the Walloon Region, and two grants from the Agathon De Potter Fund of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium. Dr Mouchet is an editorial board member of Data in Brief (Elsevier). He co-organised the Belgian editions of Photonics Online Meetup (bePOM) in 2020 and 2021, as well as the 2021 edition of the Living Light Conference series dedicated to Early Career Researchers.

Collection Overview

Investigations of nanophotonic structures in living systems started in the Enlightenment Age by Robert Hooke, who understood that the colours of certain animals are a consequence of their ‘thin-film structures’. The curiosity of human beings to reveal the links between the structure and function of complex, biological systems at the nanoscale increases with time.

Today, nanophotonics in living systems relates to properties of materials arising from nanostructures embedded naturally or artificially in biological tissues. It uniquely connects theragnostics, biological functions, ecology, evolution, and morphogenesis with optics, meta-material research, biomimetics, wetting, sensing, quantum science, lasers, plasmonics, and nanotechnology in general.

This methods collection will cover and point out the importance of “Nanophotonics and Living Systems” from fundamental and biological perspectives, including fundamental and applied perspectives of nano-optics, photonics and plasmonics (classical, quantum and bioinspired).
