She was awarded with an Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship and had a chance to visit the Thompson Rivers University (2013) where she worked with Environmental Microbiology (Canada, 2013). She was also an intern at West Pomeranian University of Technology (Poland, 2014), researching the effects of adding inulin to the piglet diet.

Arnaldo Rodrigues dos Santos Jr.
Federal University of ABC, Center of Natural and Human Sciences, São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil
Dr. Arnaldo Rodrigues dos Santos Jr. graduated in Biological Sciences from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (1993), holds a Masters in Cell Biology from the State University of Campinas (1996) and a PhD in Cellular and Structural Biology also from the State University of Campinas (2001). He is currently Associate Professor at the Center for Natural and Human Sciences, Federal University of ABC. He has experience in the field of Morphology, with an emphasis on Cytology and Cell Biology and acts mainly in the study of in vitro cell differentiation induced by growth substrates. Its main line of investigation is the study of interactions between cells in culture with biomaterials, aiming at tissue engineering procedures. He works on the following topics: cell culture, cell growth and differentiation, biomaterials, bioresorbable polymers and metal alloys. In 2016, he started working at the UFABC Innovation Agency (Inova UFABC), where he coordinated the Unit's Technology Transfer Division (DTT). He is currently the Director of the Innovation Agency.

Luciana Pastena Giorno
Federal University of ABC, Center of Natural and Human Sciences, São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil
Luciana Pastena Giorno is currently a PhD student and a Brazilian Researcher at the Centro Brasileiro de Referência em Inovações Tecnológicas para Esportes Paralímpicos (CINTESP.Br). She holds an MSc in Biotechnoscience from the Universidade Federal do ABC (2020), and is a Resident in Transplantation and Organ Harvesting from the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (2014). She did undergraduation in physiotherapy, and during 2016-2019 she worked at Hospital do Coração. She contributed as co-orientation of a graduate student in her scientific initiation researching muscle injuries and participated in the committee’s organizing at the 1st Workshop International Lolita San Miguel in Brazil (2012). Her current research interests are in the areas of tissue engineering, with a focus on bioresorbable polymeric materials for the repair of tissue and muscle injuries.
Bioprinting is a technique that has been applied in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM).
The techniques currently used for the 3D printing of scaffolds involve a process of overlapping deposition of layers that includes, but is not limited to, material extrusion by Fusion Filament Fabrication (FFF) and Direct Ink Writing (DIW), Power Bed Fusion (PWF) for plastic parts, stereolithography (SLA) and material jetting. Some techniques using cells are DIW and FFF, materials jetting by jetting printing and Material Jetting by Laser-Assisted Bioprinting (LAB). One of the main challenges of TERM is the creation of matrices that promote the regeneration of organized and fully functional tissues in the desired region. The characteristics of the substrate are important for inducing cells to differentiate or to maintain the state of cell differentiation.
Hydrogels are cross-linked polymeric structures that swell in aqueous solution and are essential components to produce tissue engineering scaffolds and, with due development, a bioink. The latter are “ink” (material) formulations that allow the printing of living cells. Hydrogels when combined with cells are known as bioink.
Currently this technology has wide application in the most diverse areas as regenerative medicines, tissue engineering and transplants, drug screening and cancer research. In addition to offering several advantages, such as accurate and controlled deposition of cells, hormones, drugs, and growth factors, etc., thus guiding improved tissue regeneration.
TERM can be understood as the application of the principles of exact sciences and engineering for the creation and repair of tissues. Some general strategies were adopted to obtain new tissues a multidisciplinary science that requires knowledge of biological areas, engineering, materials sciences, and health sciences.
Demanding a multidisciplinary field, this collection brings together 5 articles that support the field of study and its growing evolution. Enjoy reading!
