Néstor J. Martínez-Hernández is a thoracic surgeon who was born in Valencia, Spain, and attended to Valencia University, School of Medicine. He specialized in thoracic surgery in Valencia University General Hospital, after wards he moved to University Hospital of la Ribera, in Alzira. He received his PhD from Valencia University. His thesis work, in the group of Dr. Manuel Mata-Roig, focused on the development of an experimental transplantation of decellularized tracheas protocol in rabbit model. He has also developed and published several papers on clinical tracheal surgery in human, being also the editor of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery Consensus Document on airway surgery in 2015. He is nowadays Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery and the thoracic surgery editor of “Cirugía Española”, the official Spanish surgery journal.

Collection Overview

Diseases of the respiratory system, an essential element for life, are among the ten main causes of death worldwide. These conditions have been extensively studied. However, many of these diseases are incurable unless the affected organ can be replaced through transplantation.

Despite the long history of lung transplantation, many aspects are not well-understood, with a wide margin for improvement, but this will require extensive research. In this regard, new strategies and experimental models are needed to better understand both whole organ transplantation and cell-based transplantation in diseases such as lung cancer.

In cases with chest wall involvement, the wall can be reconstructed through a prosthesis, flap, or graft. However, there is still a lack of standard protocols for other components of the respiratory system such as the airway, and the optimal approach—whether total or partial replacement—remains unclear. There is currently an area of intense research, although experience in humans is still limited.

In this context, this collection of articles aims to report relevant advances in the field of lung and airway transplantation, including clinical developments and novel strategies based on the use of in vitro and in vivo experimental models.
