Dr. Keni Vidilaseris is a researcher working on membrane protein characterization and structure determination at the University of Helsinki. He received his PhD in 2014 from Max Perutz Labs, University of Vienna, Austria, with a scholarship from ASEAN-European Academic University Network on the BILBO1 protein from T. brucei. In 2017, he received a postdoctoral research grant from the Academy of Finland. He studies the membrane-bound pyrophosphatases from pathogenic parasites, such as Plasmodium, Trypanosoma, and Leishmania, as potential drug targets. Other than that, Dr. Vidilaseris is also working to elucidate the structure and function of acidocalcisome proteins responsible for phosphate homeostasis in the acidocalcisome of those parasites.

Collection Overview

Integral membrane proteins, which are encoded by 20-30% of all open reading frames and provide critical functions in the cell, account for around 60% of drug targets. However, only about 2-3% of their structures have been solved, putting them well behind their soluble counterparts. This is due to their hydrophobic nature, making it more challenging to express, isolate, and characterize. This collection protocol will provide the latest developments in membrane protein production, purification, characterization, and structure determination methods. This includes the modern protein expression techniques in various hosts, membrane protein solubilization screen, quality control for preparation of pure membrane proteins, and state-of-the-art approaches for studying structural and dynamic aspects of membrane proteins. The goal is to facilitate diverse techniques to develop a multifaceted approach to understand integral membrane proteins and their crucial biological processes.
