Dr. Jean Marshall is a Research Fellow at the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG, University of Warwick, UK). She obtained her Ph.D. in surface-initiated polymer chemistry from the University of Cambridge, UK. Following her Ph.D., she completed 2 postdoctoral positions working on stimulus-responsive polymers. She subsequently worked as Senior Chemist in an industrial position, focused on novel polymers for ink formulations. Her research interests include novel polymers for use in Lithium-ion batteries, and polymer materials as part of a circular economy.

Collection Overview

Fluoropolymers are an increasingly ubiquitous class of materials. By nature, they are composed of large molecules containing a high proportion of carbon-fluorine bonds. This molecular structure gives them high thermal stability as well as considerable chemical inertness, and these characteristics make them valuable in a huge range of sectors, from automotive to biomedical applications. However, there are several challenges involved in their use. Their synthesis is demanding, due to the gaseous nature of the monomers from which they are derived, and their chemical inertness can also make them difficult to solubilize or to process. Existing strategies to overcome these challenges include the formation of copolymers, development of new solvent systems, and surface modification.

This collection will cover a variety of techniques used for processing and use of fluoropolymers, and will therefore be of use to scientists and engineers looking to make functional components from fluoropolymer materials.
