Harrson Santana earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Campinas, Brazil, in 2016. His Ph.D. thesis was the investigation of biodiesel synthesis in microchannels. In 2015 he spent several months at the University of Glasgow (UK) studying the application of microwaves in inorganic reactions and the manufacture of micro devices using 3D printers. He is currently a research fellow and professor of chemical engineering and microfluidics, working in the field of development of microfluidic devices for chemical processes, numerical simulations, and 3D printing. His scientific production includes 83 scientific works, among works published in specialized journals (27), edited books (2), book chapters (3), filed patents and certificates of addition of invention (6), computer programs (7), among others works. His scientific interest focuses on transport phenomena in microfluidic systems, scale-up of microreactors and 3D printers applied to chemical processes in microscale.

João Lameu da Silva Júnior holds Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Chemical Engineering School from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. He is currently an adjunct professor in Biomedical Engineering at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC) in the Center for Engineering, Modeling and Applied Social Sciences (CECS). Since 2010, he has worked with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) by studying multiphase flows and microfluidics mostly applied to chemical processing. Since 2015, he collaborated in research project focusing the biodiesel synthesis, resulting in significant contributions to the field, including 17 papers about biodiesel synthesis in microfluidic devices, 3 book chapters and the edition of a complete book about process intensification and microfluidics. Currently, his topics of interest include the use of CFD in the fields of biomedical and chemical processing engineering. The areas of interest include process intensification, microfluidics, thermodynamics, modeling and simulation of multiphysics-coupled problems, and the design and optimization of devices applied to chemical and biomedical fields.

Collection Overview

Biodiesel is a useful energy alternative to fossil fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable biofuel that can be directly used in diesel engines without major modifications. Considering the current economic status worldwide, sustainable strategies are dependent on renewable processes, thereby leading to the rapid development of technologies to enhance the performance of continuous biodiesel synthesis. However, due to the difficulty inherent from mass transfer hindering, the continuous processing of biodiesel synthesis still requires process intensification. Some recent strategies include improving fluid mixing and chemical reaction performance, recovery of excess reactants, and product separation and purification.

This collection aims to highlight the state-of-art methods of biodiesel production, including innovative methods for chemical process intensification and product purification by experimental and theoretical approaches. Overall, this collection will be a go-to resource of various methodologies for researchers working in process intensification for biodiesel production thereby leading to rapid progress in this field.
