Dr. Van der Henst is a Group Leader at the VIB-VUB Centre for Structural Biology and an Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) since 2021. He completed his doctoral studies at UNamur in 2012, in the field of Molecular and Cellular Microbiology with a focus on host pathogen interactions. He then went on to pursue his postdoctoral studies in 2012 at Université catholique de Louvain which focused on bacterial stress response. He completed his second postdoctoral fellowship at EPFL, Global Health Institute in 2017, which focused on host pathogen interactions. He was an invited researcher and a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at UNamur (2018-2019), where his research focused on antimicrobial resistances and drug discovery. Since the year 2020, he is appointed as a Group Leader at VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology where his lab focuses on multidrug-resistant bacteria, with a clear emphasis on the Gram-negative bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii.

Collection Overview

Acinetobacter spp. are Gram-negative and non-flagellated bacteria that are heterogeneous at the genetic and phenotypic levels. The use of common and standardized protocols will help to better characterize these bacteria. The aim of this Methods Collection is to include techniques in the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, genetic, host-pathogens interactions and infectiology using Acinetobacter bacteria, such as in vitro and in vivo infections methods, especially using new infection models and approaches, together with population and single cell levels quantification and imaging are welcomed. High-throughput methods to study at the fundamental level Acinetobacter bacteria or screening for new antimicrobials will also be considered.
