Collection Overview

Terpenes and terpenoids constitute one of the largest and most structurally diverse classes of natural products, with profound significance across pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food science, cosmetics, and materials chemistry. Their broad spectrum of biological activities—including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective effects—continues to drive innovation in both fundamental research and industrial applications. Alongside their natural abundance, advances in synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and chemical synthesis are rapidly expanding access to both known and novel terpene scaffolds, reinforcing their central role in modern science and technology.

Despite this progress, the field faces persistent challenges related to sustainable sourcing, structural complexity, low-yield extraction, scalability of synthesis, and precise functional characterization. Additionally, issues surrounding standardization, reproducibility, and efficient translation from laboratory discovery to industrial or clinical implementation remain significant barriers. The integration of multidisciplinary approaches—spanning chemistry, biology, and engineering—remains essential but is not yet fully realized.

This Collection aims to provide a comprehensive platform that captures the full landscape of terpene and terpenoid research. It will bring together methodological advancements, original research discoveries, and reviews encompassing natural product discovery, biosynthesis, chemical and biotechnological production, structural elucidation, functional analysis, formulation strategies, and diverse applications across various fields.

By consolidating contributions across disciplines, this collection will serve as a valuable resource for researchers seeking to deepen mechanistic understanding, improve production strategies, and accelerate application-driven research. It will foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, enhance methodological transparency, and ultimately contribute to advancing the scientific and translational potential of terpenes and terpenoids.
