Dr. Umut Özsoy is currently working as an Associate Professor at Akdeniz University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy. Dr. Umut Özsoy received the "Doctor Rerum Medicinalium (Dr. Rer. Medic)" title from the University of Cologne Anatomy Institute with his PhD thesis titled "Astrogliosis after spinal cord injury is proportional to lesion severity, regulates serotonergic axonal sprouting and correlates with motor recovery" in Germany 2012. He received his second doctorate in 2013 in Anatomy from Akdeniz University Health Sciences Institute in Turkey. In his doctorate, he investigated the effects of hypoglossal-facial anastomosis on collateral branching in the lesion site and poly-innervation pattern in the motor endplate after facial nerve injury. Dr. Umut Özsoy's fields of study can be summarized as nerve regeneration, facial paralysis, 3D morphometric analysis, and 3D motion analysis. He focuses on studies aiming to contribute to developing new diagnostic and treatment methods with current morphometric and kinematic data collection methods.

Collection Overview

Three-dimensional (3D) digitization of morphology is increasing familiarly with technological developments. Once data is digitized, even the complex structures can be precisely and comprehensively quantified, reshaped, or 3D printed. Thus, these technologies make the diagnosis, treatment, and research safer and more accessible by replacing invasive imaging techniques or reducing the cost of expensive modeling procedures. It is also perfect for creating virtual models of new designs inspired by nature with reverse engineering applications and simulating its functions in different conditions. Moreover, recording 3D geometry and texture of objects in the digital environment allows detailed documentation of critical data and the creation of libraries for educational, scientific, clinical, or forensic purposes. Several varieties of 3D digitization methods and devices are available for particular purposes, such as data obtaining principles, light sources, sizes, and sensitivity. Due to all the factors mentioned above, 3D technologies bring new perspectives to many disciplines in solving problems. This Methods Collection provides details of state-of-the-art 3D morphometry digitizing and analyzes methodologies that can replace or develop conventional scientific interventions.
