Boston Children’s Hospital

Dr. DeJong Lempke received her Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh in 2016. She completed her Master of Education in Kinesiology, focusing on athletic training from the University of Virginia in 2017, where she was a graduate assistant athletic trainer. She completed her thesis project on ultrasound-derived muscle function related to lower extremity injury. She continued her studies at the University of Virginia where she completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree in sports medicine in 2021, with her dissertation entitled “Wearable sensors for in-field running gait analysis & intervention”. Alex began as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention through Boston Children’s Hospital in 2021. Her current research interests include quantifying gait biomechanics using wearable technology for youth runners and exploring musculoskeletal and other physical factors related to an injury.

Collection Overview

Ultrasound imaging offers a non-invasive and clinically feasible means to assess musculoskeletal structures in real-time. Recent research has implemented ultrasound imaging to assess structural and functional changes in anatomical structures as they relate to prevalent musculoskeletal injuries. Such studies have begun to use novel approaches to imaging, such as incorporating imaging during dynamic tasks and across functional movements of the sport. Given that many medical professionals have increasingly gained access to these technologies in their respective clinical sites, establishing consistent imaging methods is essential to advance assessment approaches. Furthermore, ultrasound imaging may be used in the context of real-time feedback to promote the recruitment and activation of musculature following a sports injury. This methods collection aims to synthesize recent advancements in musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging methods in the context of sports injury assessment and intervention. This information will provide an essential reference to healthcare professionals incorporating musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging into their clinical toolbox.
