Dr. Yan Liu received her PhD degree from Sun Yat-sen University in 2007. After postdoctoral positions at Hong Kong Baptist University (2007−2009, Hong Kong) with Prof. Zhi-Hong Jiang and Kyoto University (2010−2013, Kyoto) with Prof. Keiji Maruoka, she joined Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou. She was promoted as Associate Professor in 2014 and full professor in 2019 at the School of Chemical Engineering and Light Industry, Guangdong University of Technology. She won the Guangdong Provincial Award for Progress in Science and Technology (2020, China); Her research interests are (1) asymmetric catalysis and radical chemistry: new synthetic methodologies; (2) the development of specific copper chelators as potential anti-Alzheimer’s disease agents. So far, she has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers.

Collection Overview

More efficient and practical organic synthesis methods are developed and reported daily in academia. However, the scale-up effect of organic synthesis makes scale-up quite challenging. Therefore, synthetic scale-up methods are crucially essential for the industrialization of organic reactions.

We hope that this topic will provide the recent advances and seminal guidelines for scale-up and better understand the critical points involved in kilogram-scale reactions compared with milligram-scale or gram-scale responses for promising their continuous development.

Areas to be covered in this research topic may include, but are not limited to

(1) Design synthetic methods that can be efficiently scaled up for kilogram-scale and sub-kilogram-scale. (e.g., what’s the difference between gram-scale and kilogram-scale reactions, how to control the scale-up process, etc.)

(2) Scale-up the asymmetric transformation (e.g., how to build a chiral center, how to keep the chirality, etc.)

(3) The use of kilogram-scale dangerous (flammable or explosive) or sensitive reagents (e.g., Butyl lithium, Grignard reagents, hyperoxides, etc.)

(4) Synthetic application of kilogram-sale organic reactions (e.g., bioactive compounds, organic materials, fine chemicals, etc.)

(5) Catalysis in large-scale organic reactions.

(6) Industrialization of organic reactions (e.g., organic reactions on a ton-scale)
