Marika Pellegrini

University of L’Aquila, Environmental Sciences section, Dept. MeSVA

Marika Pellegrini is a Postdoctoral researcher in Environmental Microbiology. She graduated with the highest qualification in Biology from the University of L'Aquila (Italy). She completed her PhD in Food Sciences from the University of Teramo, along with performing 6 months of research experience at the IPOA laboratory of the University of Miguel Hernández de Elche (Spain). She received her PhD with honours and the Doctor Europaeus certification in 2018. Since 2018 she works at the Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology (University of L’Aquila). Her main research projects are on the selection, characterization, and exploitation of beneficial bacteria for sustainable productions (bio-agriculture, biopolymers, and bioremediation) and molecular characterization of environmental biomes. She has published 30 scientific articles in several international journals, in which she appears as the first author or as the corresponding author. She is the manager of several national scientific projects and supervises the laboratory activities of research fellows and residents.

Beatrice Farda

University of L’Aquila, Environmental Sciences section, Dept. MeSVA

Beatrice Farda is a Postgraduate fellow in Environmental Microbiology. She received her Environmental Biology master’s degree from the University of L’Aquila in 2021 with honours. Currently, she is a fellow researcher at the Environmental Microbiology laboratory (University of L’Aquila). Her research focuses on the isolation, characterization, and exploitation of bacteria for the phytopathogen biocontrol and biostimulant properties under in vitro, greenhouse, and open field cultivations. In particular, she has a pluriannual experience with saffron and the biocontrol of fungal phytopathogens. She has published scientific articles in international journals and participated in several national and international congresses.

Collection Overview

Bacterial strains for biotechnological applications include prokaryotic organisms with remarkable metabolic adaptability and unique cellular features. These microorganisms are also an outstanding source of novel metabolites, making them valuable for biotechnological applications such as antibiotic production, biocontrol agents, biostimulants, bioremediation, bio-recovery, bioplastics, and biofuels. Researchers can isolate, purify, and characterize bacterial strains based on specific biotechnological applications. This Methods Collection aims to compile current approaches and strategies for isolating beneficial bacterial strains, establishing axenic cultures, performing DNA barcoding, and characterizing their biotechnological properties.
