China Agricultural University, College of Grassland Science and Technology
Dr. Deng Wang is a Research Scientist in the College of Grassland Science and Technology, China Agricultural University; his research interest focuses on rodent population dynamics and ecosystems and the management methods of rodent pests, spanning from ecological to molecular approaches to understand what rodent population dynamic and the mechanisms, and how to manage them sustainably in agricultural or grassland habitats. Current research activities include rodent biology, mating and dispersal patterns, social behaviors, reproduction characteristics, the geographical distribution of genealogical lineages in Brandt’s vole, anti-fertility treatments for rodents at the population level, and the Trap-Barrier System for rodent monitoring and management. Now, he is a member of the Rodent Control Committee of the Chinese Plant Protection Society. He has co-authored more than50 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters.

Dr. Zhenggang Xu is a Research Scientist in the Key Laboratory of National Forestry and Grassland Administration on Management of Western Forest Bio-Disaster, College of Forestry, Northwest A & F University. His primary research interest is in ecological restoration. For the past 10 plus years, Dr. Xu Zhenggang has been particularly concerned about applying new technologies in environmental restoration projects, primarily based on an interdisciplinary. He developed a rodent damage assessment system based on GIS technology. He was also involved in the development of satellite trackers for wildlife. Ecological restoration is an integrated management process of natural ecosystems. Therefore, his research object is vast, including animals, plants, and microorganisms. At the same time, his research scales include molecular mechanisms, individual behaviors, model predictions, and landscape evaluations. Now, he is a member of the Rodent Control Committee of the Chinese Plant Protection Society. He has co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. He has also won several scientific awards based on his academic achievements.
Rodent management is closely related to agricultural production and is a research field with a long history. With the development of technology and the concept change, many new methods have been applied to rodent pest management in recent years. First, artificial intelligence technology is used for the feature extraction of rodents and harm assessment. Second, big data and computational science make it possible to simulate the dynamics of rodent populations. Most importantly, we treated some rodents as pests, but now we emphasize that all rodents are an essential part of the ecosystem. The above changes have brought crucial opportunities and challenges to rodent management. Rodent management concerns both ecological theory and production applications. Now is the time to summarize the methods used in the field to make the research repeated.
This Methods Collection aims to share standardized protocols for rodent identification, behavior classification, efficient extraction of metabolites, and metabolic pathway analysis; standardized model methods, including spatial and time series models. The subjects can be either wild rodents or laboratory mice. The latest methods dominate the plans and include the standardization of traditional methods. We trust this approach will encourage scientists from different disciplines to participate in rodent management research to expand the field’s boundaries.
