Periodontitis is a major health concern that affects 47% of the population over the age of 30, 70% of the population over the age of 60, and is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. In addition to periodontitis, dentists are faced with the challenge of treating peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease that involves bone loss around dental implants. Practitioners have experienced frustration from both the patient and provider’s perspectives of managing periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Different animal models, for periodontal and peri-implant bone loss are suitable for dissecting disease initiation, development, and identifying treatment modalities that would lead to tissue regeneration. The goal of this collection is to demonstrate standardized protocols for periodontal and peri-implant bone loss. This collection will assist researchers in identifying and utilizing a well-established animal model to study periodontitis and peri-implantitis.
