Dr. Luis received his BS in Biomedicine from BUAP in 2008. He earned his Ph.D. from the Laboratory Of Sensory Transduction and Nociception at the Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante, Spain in 2014. He worked in the laboratory of Dr. Félix Viana and Carlos Belmonte and described the functional role of TASK-3 channels in TRPM8-thermosensitive neurons. He is currently a researcher in the Instituto de Fisiología Celular at UNAM, working in the National Laboratory of Channelopathies. His research focuses on the role of ion channels in cancer progression and other pathologies.

Dr. Pedro Segura Chama is a Scientist at National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz, Mexico. He received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Science from National Autonomous University of Mexico in 2012. He has experience in electrophysiological recordings including amperometry on cultured chromaffin cells and in acute adrenal slices. Currently, his research is focused on the modulation of membrane excitability in nociceptive neurons from neuropathic pain models combining behavioral tests in rats with calcium imaging and patch-clamp techniques in cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons.

Collection Overview

Ion channels are essential proteins in the body that spans across the plasma membranes of all cells, allowing the movement of different ions following their electrochemical gradients. This ion movement is crucial for many biological processes. Since the discovery of ion channels, many articles have been published, making this scientific field full of findings and new methodologies.

Our aim is to create a collection highlighting the importance of ion channels in different aspects of cell physiology. We attempt to provide an overview of different methodologies that allow us to evaluate ion channel function and its various roles in cell processes. Methods include in vitro studies followed by behavioral studies, heterologous model systems to express ion channels of interest, primary tissue cultures, as well as in situ and in vivo fluorescent and electrophysiological studies that provide insights into the functional role of ion channels in cellular excitability. Furthermore, behavioral functioning in mammals is explained by integrating excitability with different cellular signals.
