Collection Overview

Upper extremity fractures are the most common worldwide, with an increasing incidence in aging people. Children and young adults are more likely to have upper extremity fractures due to vehicle accidents or high-energy trauma. In contrast, the elderly have high-risk fractures due to falls. Upper limb fractures significantly affect daily life, occupation, and sports activities, which could extend to several months or more until proper healing occurs. Upper limb fractures include clavicle, arm, and hand fractures. A high-energy trauma could lead to arm and clavicle fractures, and the bone shaft would be a more exposed site to fracture. Hand fractures account for the majority of upper extremity fractures, which occur with lower energy trauma than arm fractures and are frequently associated with sports or repetitive movements. The operative and non-operative management of an upper extremity fracture depends on the fracture type, location, and stability and begins after obtaining a radiological image and a general evaluation of the fracture. When the fracture is severe and cannot be managed with standard methods, new advanced surgical techniques, such as 3D printing, have emerged to provide better surgical outcomes. This Methods Collection aims to present and evaluate the different and advanced surgical management of upper extremity fractures.
