Dr. Zachary Davis received his PhD in Neuroscience at the University of California,Davis, studying the development of the early visual system. He then joined the Systems Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies with Dr. John Reynolds as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, studying the role of intrinsic cortical activity in visual perception in marmoset monkeys. Dr. Davis is currently a Staff Scientist at the Salk, developing new techniques to image and record from cortical populations in behaving marmosets. He is interested in understanding how individual cell types contribute to activity patterns that emerge from the interaction of cortical networks within and across cortical areas during perceptual decision-making in primates.

Collection Overview

Non-human primates provide a means to study the complex function of the brain in a species strongly homologous to humans. Recently, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) has been growing in popularity as a model organism for studying cortical function. This popularity is due to the accessibility of large regions of the marmoset cortex, the similarity in the cortical organization and functional specialization between marmosets and humans, and their small size and fast breeding rate. In conjunction with the rise in popularity of the marmoset, there has been a marked increase in the development and use of experimental techniques that are suited to the characteristics of this species.

In this Methods Collection, we will explore strategies developed by the community to measure activity from individual neurons and populations of neurons in the cortex of marmosets. This resource will demonstrate the novel solutions researchers have reached to overcome the practical limitations of deploying advanced imaging and electrophysiological recording techniques in the marmoset. Further, this collection will serve as a guide for researchers seeking to optimize their strategies or innovate new paradigms for studying the cortex in the non-human primate.
