Lower extremity fractures are common worldwide, with an increasing incidence. The youth are more likely to suffer lower extremity fractures due to vehicle accidents or high-energy trauma, while falls may be the main reason for the elderly. Lower extremity fractures significantly affect daily life, occupation, and sports activities, which could extend for several months or more until proper healing occurs. Whether surgical treatment should be conducted for a lower extremity fracture depends on the fracture type, location, and stability and begins after obtaining a radiological image and a general evaluation of the fracture. In previous studies, open reduction and internal fixation were thought to be the primary surgical methods for lower extremity fractures. In recent years, new minimally invasive techniques, such as minimally invasive percutaneous plate internal fixation, percutaneous channel screw, and robot navigation, have been used in treating fractures and achieved satisfactory surgical outcomes. This Methods Collection is dedicated to minimally invasive surgery for treating lower extremity fractures.
