Dr. Mu-Huai Fang has been an assistant research fellow at the Research Center for Applied Sciences at Academia Sinica since August 2021. He earned his PhD in July 2018, at the Department of Chemistry of National Taiwan University (NTU) under the supervision of Prof. Ru-Shi Liu. He obtained his BS degree at the same institute in 2014. His former research was in phosphor materials. He mainly focused on developing narrow-band visible-light and broad-band infrared-light phosphors via structural engineering. Also, he committed to utilizing synchrotron techniques to understand the bulk and local structural information of phosphor materials. Currently, his research focuses on luminescent materials, nanomaterials, quantum dots, photo-electric materials, and energy-related materials with applications in light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and solid-state batteries.

Collection Overview

Luminescent materials have received significant attention worldwide for the past decades. However, the types of luminescent materials have become diverse in recent years, along with changes in their synthesis methods, analysis techniques, and applications. For instance, the synthesis methods developed from traditional high-temperature synthesis to high-pressure, co-precipitation, and water-assisted solid-state synthesis. Analysis techniques have also evolved from bulk materials to single-particle analysis. Furthermore, luminescent materials have brought newer applications, such as back-lighting, plant cultivation, and food analysis. These processes are much more complex than traditional ones.

Although international journals have reported most of these advancements, replicating the experiments or achieving comparable results remains challenging. The detailed experimental parameters are not clearly outlined or challenging to explain in words in the journal. Therefore, in this Methods Collection, we aim to comprehensively demonstrate the synthesis, analysis, and application processes of luminescent materials through the video and text format of JoVE. We believe that the scientific community of luminescent materials can benefit from this collection by learning the necessary conditions to reproduce experiments and expediting their research.
