University of Milan

Marco Farronato, DDS, obtained his orthodontic postgraduate degree from the University of Milan in 2018 and earned a PhD in clinical research from the same university. His doctoral research focused on new digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. He was selected for an international research program at KU Leuven, University of Leuven, Belgium, and was granted the title 'Doctor Europaeus.' Dr. Farronato has authored over 90 international publications and co-edited three books. He is a reviewer for European Radiology (Springer) and the Journal of Dentistry (Elsevier). Additionally, he holds the position of editor at Bioengineering (MDPI) and serves as an academic editor for the International Journal of Dentistry (Hindawi).Dr. Farronato teaches various courses, including national and international master's programs. He is a visiting professor at the University of Medicine, Tirana, Faculty of Dentistry, and a research fellow at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Medical University, Plovdiv. He is also the developer of a PCT patent related to augmented reality for anatomic visualization. Moreover, Dr. Farronato is the founder and CEO of a med-tech SaaS startup specializing in augmented reality applications in medicine.

Collection Overview

The integration of augmented reality (AR) and 3D digital innovations in medicine and dentistry has been transformative, offering disruptive solutions to common problems and revolutionizing healthcare practices. AR enables real-time visualization and interactive manipulation of anatomical structures, allowing surgeons to overlay critical patient data for precision and reduced risks. In dentistry, 3D digital innovations enhance diagnostics, treatment planning, and customized 3D fabrication.

This Methods Collection aims to provide a resource for researchers, clinicians, and educators interested in harnessing the potential of the latest cutting-edge technologies. The collection aims to feature methods, protocols, or case studies illustrating different approaches to AR and 3D digital technologies in medicine and dentistry. Contributors will explore topics such as AR-guided surgery, dental CAD/CAM systems, artificial intelligence medical education simulations, and immersive engagement.

The aim is to empower the knowledge to adopt and adapt these new technologies in clinical practice to promote a better understanding of how different technologies can enhance personalized care. Through comprehensive tutorials and case presentations, this collection aims to serve as a resource for driving innovation in medicine and dentistry.
