Dr. Ismail Cimen earned a BS in Biology from Hacettepe University in 2008 and completed a PhD in the Department of Biology at the Middle East Technical University in 2012. During subsequent postdoctoral training at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Bilkent University, he demonstrated that palmitoleate has preventive effects on complex metabolic and inflammatory diseases, such as atherosclerosis, by suppressing macrophage ER stress and inflammation. In 2016, Dr. Cimen relocated to the Institute for Cardiovascular Prevention (IPEK) at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, where he showed that disrupting a miR-206-3p–CXCR4 interaction in vascular cells is atheroprotective in mice and promotes atheroprotective functions in human and mouse vascular cells in vitro. Currently, Dr. Ismail Cimen's research is centered on unraveling the intricate role of DNA methylation and demethylation mechanisms in immune cells, specifically within the context of inflammatory diseases.

Collection Overview

Metabolic diseases, including conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, pose a significant global health challenge. Metabolic mechanisms are fundamental to an organism's ability to extract energy from nutrients, synthesize essential molecules, and maintain metabolic homeostasis. Identifying and quantifying these mechanisms is essential for localizing perturbations in patients and leveraging findings to address these health challenges. Metabolic mechanism research involves various methods and techniques to study and understand the intricate biochemical and molecular processes that underlie metabolism.

This collection will encompass a range of metabolic mechanism methods, including metabolic flux analysis using stable isotope tracers, lipidomics, single-cell metabolomics, NMR spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), organoids and 3D cultures, metabolic super-resolution microscopy, in vivo metabolic imaging, genome editing for metabolic pathway manipulation, real-time metabolite monitoring, organ-on-a-chip models, and chemoproteomic approaches.
