Collection Overview

Zymography is a technique for evaluating hydrolytic enzymes based on substrate breakdown. It is a powerful yet frequently misunderstood tool that offers information on active enzymes' locations, forms, and potential hydrolytic activity. However, a careful interpretation of the results is necessary. This method is suitable if one needs qualitative data about enzyme activity. Comparing samples concerning one another is a valuable application of densitometric quantification.

The proposed Methods Collection on zymography of microbial enzymes aims to compile new techniques that will be invaluable tools for a wide range of researchers in the biological and medical sciences. Additionally, it will benefit those engaged in clinical and diagnostic medicine, agriculture, environmental pollution monitoring, and forensic science. Real-time dual zymography, which combines fluorescent gelatin and casein in a single gel, is one example of a development that could lead to quicker and more reliable operations. This thematic section welcomes publications on microbial enzyme analysis using various zymographic techniques.
