David Hodge is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Montana State University. Research in his group is focused on conversion technologies for the production of renewable fuels, chemicals, polymers, and materials from plant biomass. Before his appointment at Montana State, he was Associate Professor at Michigan State University. Dr. Hodge received his PhD in chemical engineering from Colorado State University.

Collection Overview

Our goal is to develop a comprehensive library of video article documenting methods for characterization of lignocellulosic biomass and plant cell wall-derived biopolymers. Articles will focus on measuring physical, chemical and thermal properties of each biomass component. For instance, methods for measuring the following properties of lignin: hydroxyl content (31P NMR), molecular weight (GPC), chemical structure (FTIR and quantitative 2D-NMR), Tg (DSC), thermal stability (TGA), and elemental analysis (elemental analyzer and ICP). In many cases there are not standard methods, and many published papers lack critical details, which is a major problem for graduate students and young scientists trying to obtain reproducible reliable results. This collection aims to promote standardization and reproducibility in the field by highlighting novel approaches, new applications of existing techniques, and gold-standard protocols for established methods.
