Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Energy and Environment Unit

Prof. Govindasamy Jayamurugan earned his BSc (Hons.) in Chemistry in 1998 and an MSc in Organic Chemistry in 2003 from the University of Madras. In 2009, he completed his PhD in Organic Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), where his thesis, titled "Synthesis and Studies of Poly(Propyl Ether Imine) Dendrimers," led to the licensing of a technology to a biotech company. His research focused on developing novel aliphatic dendritic systems with modified functionalities for applications in biomedicine, sensing, and catalysis. Before joining INST, Mohali in 2015 as Assistant Professor, he held postdoctoral positions at the ETH-Zurich and University of Cambridge, UK, in push-pull chromophores and metal-organic supramolecules. Dr. Jayamurugan has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented extensively at international conferences. He currently leads a research group within the Energy and Environment Unit, specializing in Nano Science and Nanotechnology, Push-pull Chromophores, Polymer Chemistry, Catalysis, and Supramolecular Chemistry.

Collection Overview

Chromophores and fluorophores underpin transformative advances across chemical biology, materials science, diagnostics, optoelectronics, and environmental sensing. From precision bioimaging and super-resolution microscopy to solar energy conversion and molecular electronics, the demand for robust, tunable, and application-specific light-responsive molecules continues to expand.

Despite significant progress in this field, major challenges include precise spectral tuning across UV–Vis–NIR regions, improving quantum yield and photostability, mitigating aggregation-induced effects, controlling excited-state dynamics, and ensuring biocompatibility and environmental robustness. Scalable and sustainable synthetic strategies are still limited for many advanced molecular scaffolds. In addition, standardized protocols for quantum efficiency measurements, lifetime analysis, solvatochromic evaluation, and time-resolved spectroscopy are urgently needed. Translating molecular properties into complex biological, material, or device contexts further requires validated conjugation, surface engineering, and quantitative benchmarking methodologies.

This Topical Collection will exclusively feature rigorous, step-by-step methodological articles covering either or both experimental and computational workflows in chromophore and fluorophore research. It will emphasize various design strategies, synthesis techniques, advanced characterization, modeling, performance optimization, and applications in diverse fields.

By consolidating robust methodologies and best practices, this collection will enhance reproducibility, foster interdisciplinary translation, and accelerate the rational development of next-generation light-responsive systems for fundamental and applied sciences.
