Dr. Sérgio Brasil is a researcher studying neurosurgery and neurosonology. He obtained a Masters and PhD in the Neurology Department at HC-FMUSP in São Paulo, Brazil. His PhD thesis explored the accuracy of computed tomography angiography in the diagnosis of brain death. Currently as a post-doctoral fellow, he is studying cerebral hemodynamics and cerebral compliance in neurocritical patients.

Collection Overview

In neurocritical care, physicians are often unable to take advantage of the most important tool in medical practice - the clinical assessment. Fortunately, in recent years, knowledge of the events occurring in the injured brain has grown, allowing for the development of techniques to evaluate hemodynamic, physical, biochemical, and electrical phenomena occurring concomitantly in a wide range of diseases. Several monitoring techniques in the neuro-ICU are invasive, such as intracranial pressure monitoring and microdialysis. For this severely ill population, techniques that can bring these features to light without increasing health risks are of great importance. Likewise, for non-critical hospitalized subjects, or even outpatients, the lack of tools to aid diagnosis and treatment in neurology remains challenging.

This collection will highlight studies in which a noninvasive method has been used to assess or even treat neurological and neurocritical patients, with a focus on innovations in technology and clinical research in this field.
