Collection Overview

The evolution of digital technologies in dentistry has fundamentally transformed all aspects of clinical practice, from diagnosis and treatment planning to rehabilitation. Digital imaging, AI, and CAD/CAM systems have significantly improved diagnostic accuracy, treatment outcomes, and patient care.

Digital radiography, including CBCT and intraoral scanners, provides high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of dental structures, enabling the early detection of pathological conditions. Additionally, AI-based algorithms now facilitate the automated recognition and segmentation of pathology, enhancing diagnostic precision and workflow efficiency. AI-assisted diagnostic software represents a paradigm shift in the early identification of diseases, allowing clinicians to diagnose and classify anomalies more reliably.

In restorative and prosthetic dentistry, CAD/CAM technology has greatly improved the accuracy and customization of prosthetic restorations, resulting in better fit, function, and aesthetics. Furthermore, the integration of 3D printing technologies has optimized production efficiency, enabling the fabrication of customized prostheses, surgical guides, and implant components with enhanced accuracy and reproducibility.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including high costs, steep learning curves, and the need for consistency in digital workflows. Additionally, the application of artificial intelligence and digital technologies requires validation through large-scale clinical studies to confirm their reliability and effectiveness.

This Special Issue aims to explore the potential and limitations of digital dentistry, its impact on diagnostics, prosthodontics, and surgical applications, as well as ongoing trends in AI integration and digital manufacturing for precision oral care.
