Lev Yakovlev, PhD, is a neurophysiologist who specializes in motor learning, neuroplasticity, mental and tactile imagery, and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). He earned his PhD from Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he also completed his MSc and BSc with honors. His doctoral research focused on the formation of coordinated motor acts through motor imagery within BCI paradigms.Lev is a senior research scientist and a lecturer at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) and Shenzhen MSU-BIT University. His primary focus is on tactile imagery and sensorimotor interactions. His recent work has advanced our understanding of EEG event-related desynchronization (ERD) and corticospinal excitability during tactile imagery, with implications for neurorehabilitation and BCI development. He has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on EEG, fNIRS, and TMS-based studies, exploring mental imagery, mirror neuron system activity, and neuromodulation. Lev also supervises PhD and MSc students working on tactile imagery research using multimodal neurophysiological techniques.

Nikolay Syrov

Ruhr University Bochum

Dr. Nikolay Syrov is a postdoctoral researcher at the Computational Neurology Research Group, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He holds a PhD in Physiology and specializes in human cognitive and sensorimotor neuroscience. His research employs non-invasive brain imaging techniques including EEG, TMS-EEG, and fNIRS, alongside advanced signal processing methods that reveal brain cortical activity dynamics with high temporal resolution. In collaboration with colleagues, Dr. Syrov has extensively studied neural signatures of cortical network disruption following stroke to establish a foundation for robust diagnostics and personalized rehabilitation protocol adjustment. He possesses substantial expertise in various non-invasive brain-computer interface paradigms and their applications in sensorimotor rehabilitation.

Collection Overview

Non-invasive neurophysiology has become central to understanding human brain and nervous system function, enabling researchers and clinicians to investigate neural activity, connectivity, cognition, behavior, and sensorimotor processes without surgical intervention. Rapid advances in neuroimaging, electrophysiology, neuromodulation, neurostimulation, and computational approaches are expanding applications across basic neuroscience, neurological and psychiatric disorders, rehabilitation, brain–computer interfaces, and personalized medicine.

Despite substantial progress, the field faces challenges including variability in signal quality and experimental protocols, limited spatial or temporal resolution of individual techniques, inter-individual differences, reproducibility and standardization issues, multimodal data integration, interpretation of neural biomarkers, and translation of laboratory findings into reliable clinical and real-world applications.

This Collection aims to provide a comprehensive platform for advances in non-invasive neurophysiology, encompassing fundamental investigations, technological and analytical innovations, experimental and clinical applications, translational research, and interdisciplinary approaches. Contributions may address basic and preclinical research as well as clinical and patient-oriented studies, covering diverse questions related to neural function, behavior, cognition, disease mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and real-world applications.

The collection will welcome methods articles, original research articles, case reports, rapid reports, and review articles, providing a broad perspective on current developments, emerging applications, and future directions across the field.

By bringing together methodological advances, fundamental discoveries, clinical evidence, and emerging perspectives, the collection will facilitate knowledge exchange, encourage reproducible and interdisciplinary research, and support the translation of non-invasive neurophysiology from experimental settings into practical scientific and clinical solutions.
