Prof. David Alfaiate is an oral surgeon with expertise in periodontology, oral surgery, and implant dentistry. He has placed over 15,000 dental implants and performed nearly 3,000 advanced surgical procedures. He earned his PhD in Medicine with highest distinction (cum laude) from the University of Barcelona, focusing his research on biofunctionalized titanium implants in osteoporotic models. Currently, he is a professor of periodontology at Fernando Pessoa University and an invited lecturer at the University of Porto, where he teaches oral physiology, surgical techniques, and legal aspects of oral surgery. He also leads the Surgery, Periodontology, and Implantology Department at Clínica Davallmed in Porto, Portugal.Prof. Alfaiate has lectured internationally on clinical innovation and evidence-based implantology and has authored numerous scientific publications and book chapters. His key research interests include digital workflows in implant dentistry, bone and soft tissue regeneration, guided surgery, and implant stability assessment using RFA and ISQ. He also serves as a specialist consultant, helping translate advanced protocols into clinical practice through collaborations with research and development teams.

Collection Overview

Recent advancements in periodontology, oral surgery, and implant dentistry are crucial for evolving oral healthcare. These fields span biological discoveries, preclinical models, clinical interventions, and methodological advancements that impact oral health, surgical needs, and implant-based restoration. A comprehensive approach, integrating insights from basic mechanisms to clinical applications, is vital.

However, these fields face challenges requiring further investigation, including more predictable regeneration of periodontal tissues and bone, effective management of complex oral infections, and optimization of implant-based therapies for long-term success. Translating scientific discoveries into clinically relevant methods and developing personalized treatment approaches remain critical. Additionally, refining diagnostic and prognostic tools is essential for advancing patient outcomes.

This collection aims to provide a comprehensive platform to showcase the latest advancements in periodontology, oral surgery, and implant dentistry. It will feature various experimental techniques and clinical protocols, original research articles presenting preclinical and clinical findings, and case reports highlighting unique clinical scenarios.

By providing a comprehensive snapshot of cutting-edge advancements, it will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, and educators. Such an approach will foster methodological rigor, promote evidence-based practices, and support the dissemination of novel approaches, ultimately contributing to enhanced patient care across periodontology, oral surgery, and implant dentistry.
