Diabetes and obesity have emerged as major public health problems globally. This diabetes-obesity epidemic is becoming the biggest epidemic in human history and raises the risk of cardiovascular disease by twofold. As a result of this alarming rate of increase in these diseases, research efforts to combat these health challenges are growing. This collection brings together the wide range of techniques that are used to study diabetes and obesity in a variety of model systems.
Such methods will include the isolation of pancreatic islets from mice, the use of transgenic zebrafish to study the beta cells at different stages of development, the culture and maintenance of mouse/rat cultured beta cells and their usage, and the use of human islets collected from normal and diabetic individuals.
Diabetes is related to obesity, and researchers often study the effect of obesity on dysregulated glucose homeostasis and vice versa. Techniques such as differentiating preadipocytes (3T3-L1 cells) to adipocytes and performing Oil Red O staining on cultured cells and model organisms are useful to study adipogenesis and fat deposition.
This collection is designed to provide a detailed understanding of the techniques that are used to study diabetes and obesity using a variety of model organisms and cultured cell lines.
