Autonomic dysfunction is a common and clinically significant feature of many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy, and related disorders. It contributes substantially to patient morbidity, affects quality of life, and often provides important diagnostic and prognostic information. Despite its importance, approaches to the clinical assessment of autonomic dysfunction remain highly variable across institutions, and many examination techniques and testing protocols are insufficiently standardized or poorly visualized in the existing literature.
This Topical Collection aims to provide a comprehensive, method-focused resource that visualizes and standardizes approaches to the clinical assessment of autonomic dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases. Leveraging JoVE’s video-based format, the collection will highlight practical bedside examinations, structured clinical assessments, and commonly used autonomic testing methodologies, including cardiovascular, sudomotor, and related evaluations. Particular emphasis will be placed on techniques that are difficult to convey through text alone, as well as on common pitfalls, disease-specific considerations, and best practices.
This collection will serve as a practical reference for clinicians, clinical researchers, and trainees involved in the care and study of patients with neurodegenerative diseases. By improving the clarity, reproducibility, and accessibility of autonomic assessment methods, the collection aims to promote more consistent clinical practice, facilitate multicenter research, and enhance the recognition and evaluation of autonomic dysfunction in neurodegeneration.
