The proper regulation of gene expression, through its numerous mechanisms, coordinates developmental programs and allows cells to respond promptly to the changing environment. The brain is the most extraordinary organ in the human body comprised of billions of the most complex cells. Still, these cells share the same genetic blueprint with cells of all other organs and tissues, all arising from an initial population of homogeneous embryonic stem cells. How gene expression programs control neurodevelopment giving rise to what makes us humans is one of the most significant scientific questions in the biology field.
Development is largely understood as being triggered by changes in the cellular environment. These include changes in exposure to growth hormones and nutrients. Understanding how stem cells respond to environmental stimuli leading to cell differentiation, and how these induced developmental programs go awry in genetic mutation backgrounds will provide groundbreaking insights into neuronal development and the pathophysiology of neurological disorders.
From studying gene expression regulation in its multiple levels to how to manipulate neurons’ genetics, this collection features critical methods that have allowed the rapid expansion of our knowledge in neurogenesis.
