Erika Palmieri is a research fellow at National Institute in Frederick, MD. At NCI, she studies the basic fundamentals of the physiology of macrophages in terms of the metabolic ways and carbon routes preferentially used in pro-inflammatory activation with combinations of metabolomics, expression analysis, biochemical assays, carbon tracing, and mass spectrometry (MS) techniques. Dr. Palmieri is also leading collaborations at intra and inter-NIH institutes on the topic of metabolic reprogramming through analysis using MS. Dr. Palmieri received her B.S. and M.S in Biotechnology and earned her PhD in Biochemical and Pharmacological Sciences from University “Aldo Moro” of, Italy. In her graduate research with Dr. Alessandra Castegna, she focused on examining metabolites as mediators of the inflammatory response and implementing MS-based methods for metabolic studies. Dr. Palmieri was a recipient of the Short-Term Fellowship from European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and of many awards from societies of biochemistry and immunology as well as of the NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence (FARE). In her academic and research career, she authored and coauthored multiple publications in studies of energetics in physiological and pathological conditions, which have been crucial for advancing the immunometabolism field.
